Short answer
After lip fillers, mild swelling, tenderness and small bruises are expected in the first days. Avoid hot drinks and squeezing the lips for 2-3 hours, and hot baths, saunas, the hammam and heavy exercise for 24 hours. The final shape shows once swelling settles. In Denizli, your check-up is with Dr. Tuba Çelebi Kayhan, who did the treatment.
At a glance
| First 2-3 hours | No hot drinks, no squeezing or rubbing the lips |
|---|---|
| First 24 hours | No hot baths, sauna, hammam or heavy exercise |
| Swelling | Mild swelling in the lips can last a few days |
| Final shape | Assessed at the check-up, once swelling has gone down |
| How long it lasts | Shorter in the lips than in areas that move less |
The lips are the most mobile and most sensitive part of the face. Their thin skin, rich network of blood vessels and the talking, eating and smiling that go on all day mean the first days after fillers go differently here than in other areas. Swelling can be more noticeable and tenderness can last longer; knowing this from the start helps the process go by without worry.
The treatment itself, the choice of product and the amount planned for a natural result are discussed at the consultation before your lip filler treatment. Once the treatment is over, keeping the result depends largely on what you do in the first days. The advice we give after fillers at our clinic in Denizli runs from the first hours to your check-up.
What Do Lips Feel Like Straight After Fillers?
As soon as the treatment ends, the lips feel full, slightly tight and tender to the touch. Because the numbing cream keeps working for a while, your lips may feel a little strange when you talk or drink. Small red marks and the odd bruise may appear at the needle points.
The first thing you see in the mirror is not the final shape. Part of the fullness in the first hours comes from the product and part from the tissue's reaction to the treatment.
What Should You Watch in the First 24 Hours After Lip Fillers?
The first day is the most important period for the product to settle into place and for the needle points to close:
- Do not have hot drinks for the first 2-3 hours, and do not squeeze or rub your lips.
- For the first 24 hours, stay away from hot baths and showers, saunas, the hammam and heavy exercise.
- Do not massage your lips unless you have been told to.
- For swelling and tenderness you can use a cold compress wrapped in a clean cloth for short spells; do not put ice directly on your lips.
- Do not apply lipstick, lip liner or gloss on the first day; germs get in more easily while the needle points are open.
Keeping your head slightly raised on a pillow at night and not sleeping face down helps reduce the swelling that builds up by morning.
How Long Do Swelling and Bruising Last After Lip Fillers?
In other areas of the face, swelling after fillers mostly goes down within 1-2 hours. In the lips, mild swelling can last a few days. It is usually at its most noticeable the morning after treatment and fades over the following days.
A bruise forms when the needle meets a small capillary, and it clears on its own within a few days. Blood-thinning medicines such as aspirin, and vitamin E, increase the tendency to bruise, which is why we ask about the medicines you take before treatment. If you have an important occasion coming up, planning your fillers at least a week ahead leaves time for any bruising to fade.
What Should You Avoid After Lip Fillers?
- Biting or squeezing your lips, or pressing them with your fingers to "shape" them
- Hot environments on the first day: sauna, hammam, hot showers
- Hard exercise on the first day; increased blood flow can make swelling last longer
- Smoking; the puckering movement and the heat of the smoke slow healing
- Judging the result and asking for more filler before the swelling has gone down
Drinking through a straw and puckering your lips for long periods also put unnecessary pressure on them on the first day. Cutting down on these movements for a few days is enough; you do not need to stop eating or talking to protect your lips.
What If You Feel Firmness or a Small Lump in the Lip?
In the first days it is normal to feel small firm areas when you touch the inside of your lip. These sensations usually disappear as the product settles into the tissue and the swelling goes down. Massaging hard on your own can push the product in the wrong direction, so only massage if we recommend it, and in the way we show you.
If an irregularity is still visible from the outside once the swelling has passed, we assess it at the check-up. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with the enzyme hyaluronidase when needed; this is an important safeguard that allows the result to be corrected.
When Is the Final Look of Lip Fillers Clear?
The final shape of the lips appears once the swelling has gone down completely. At the first treatment we usually work with a measured amount; because lip tissue is prone to swelling, it is more accurate to see the definitive result a few days later. At the check-up we look together at the lip border, the balance between the two sides and the volume.
When is a top-up needed?
If the check-up shows that an area is under-filled or that there is a clear difference between the two sides, a small top-up is done. This top-up is part of keeping a natural look: building up the volume in stages rather than all at once makes the result more controlled. Natural-looking lip fillers rely on proportion more than quantity, and with a top-up we also keep the balance between the upper and lower lip in mind.
How Long Do Lip Fillers Last?
The effect of hyaluronic acid fillers varies between 6 and 18 months depending on the product and the area. Because the lips are one of the most mobile parts of the face, they last a shorter time than areas that move little, such as the chin and cheekbones. The density of the product and your metabolism also affect how long it lasts.
The filler does not disappear all at once; it is slowly absorbed over months. Repeating the treatment before the effect has fully worn off, and with less product, makes it easier to keep the shape of the lips. If vertical lines above the upper lip become noticeable when you purse your lips, a small dose of Botox can be added to the same plan as the fillers.
Which Signs After Lip Fillers Mean You Should Call Straight Away?
Serious side effects of fillers are rare, but some signs cannot wait. If you notice any of the following, call us without delay:
- Severe pain that increases over the hours instead of easing
- Whitening or paleness in or around the lips
- A purplish, net-like change in colour
- Redness, warmth, discharge or fever starting days later
These signs can point to conditions that need prompt treatment, such as the product pressing on a blood vessel or an infection. If you cannot reach us, go to the emergency department of the nearest hospital. Blurred vision is an emergency. Serious side effects and the risks of hyaluronic acid fillers are also discussed in detail before treatment.
How Is the Filler Check-Up Planned in Denizli?
The same doctor carries out your treatment and your check-up. On the day of treatment we give you your check-up date and record the product and amount used in your file. At the check-up we review the result together, plan a top-up if one is needed and talk about when the next treatment should be. If something worries you in the first days, call us without waiting for your check-up.
